Spine[dle] | Span Bench
This project is the reinvention of the common bench, and challenges the tectonic structure of wood joinery. Tasked with the goal of spanning a 48” distance while supporting approximately 100 lbs. and touching the ground at two points, the project is composed entirely of wood joinery techniques and no artificial fasteners or connectors. The piece took inspiration from the ergonomic shape of the human spine, and applied transformations to a basic triangle to create a flow of movement that encourages seating at particular points along the span. Phases of the project included small scale iterations and prototyping, design, construction, and full-scale fabrication, as well as drafting a miniature construction drawing set.
